Ebola: Bundibugyo outbreak escalates sharply
The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has nearly doubled in one week.
CDC's situation summary (as of May 26) reports 121 confirmed cases (including 17 deaths) and 1,077 suspected cases (including 246 deaths), up from 11 confirmed and ~513 suspected the prior week.
The outbreak now spans 15 health zones across Ituri, Nord-Kivu, and Sud-Kivu provinces, with concern about further spread into Tshopo Province after a confirmed case was traced to travel from Kisangani, a major transport hub.
Uganda has reported 7 confirmed cases (1 death), up from 2 last week, including two health workers at a private hospital in Kampala, all linked to travelers from DRC.
U.S. response
Title 42 entry restrictions, invoked May 18, have been extended via interim final rule to cover green card holders who have been in DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within the prior 21 days.
Inbound air passengers are being rerouted to Dulles (IAD), Atlanta (ATL), and Houston (IAH) for enhanced screening. Houston was added May 26, partly in anticipation of FIFA World Cup logistics (DRC's national team plays in Houston June 17).
The State Department maintains a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan. The U.S. has mobilized $32 million in bilateral assistance, up from $23 million initially.
